Furniture is often heavy and awkward to move and should be left to professionals to move. There are, however, some valuable precautions you can take to prepare your furniture for moving day before the professionals arrive.
Firstly, invest in the necessary equipment. Bubble-wrap, tissue paper, tape and a tape dispenser as well as specially sized boxes (e.g. for books, or mirrors/ pictures) are all worth purchasing. Equally, sofa and arm chair covers can be purchased to further protect them during transit and avoid the fabric being ripped. It will also protect from dust if the sofa and arm chairs are to be stored for a while.
If your furniture needs to be disassembled to enable it to be moved out of the premises, try to collect all the necessary screws and components into plastic bags and attach, if possible, to the piece of furniture. It there are several parts that have been detached, label them so that you’ll know where to re-attach them after the move. Tape drawers and cupboard doors closed to avoid them flying open during transit. You may decide to put a cellophane wrap around the furniture to fully secure it.
Furniture with sharp corners can also be protected by adding furniture pads. You may also choose to wrap the legs of furniture. This could even be done with bubble wrap or even socks! This will have the double effect of preventing damage to the furniture itself and of protecting the walls of the premises when furniture is moved. If possible cover picture frames and mirrors in cardboard or padding. Consider putting a protective wrap on the top of table surfaces of perhaps large dining tables to avoid them from being damaged by other removal boxes or furniture in transit.
Alternatively, if your budget allows, hand over all of the packing to professional movers and they will pack and transport it all for you. They will supply the right packing materials and will know how best to protect your personal effects. The task will be executed efficiently and with great care.
