International moving tips to avoid mistakes: Tip 2

Apr 24. 2015

International moving can be stressful, that is why we have come up with a series of tips to help make your move go as smoothly as possible.

Tip 2: Not getting organised before the big international move

Organisation is key to the success of any international house move, being organised will help you keep control on what is going on throughout your move and plan exactly what will happen on the day. Download an international moving checklist and follow the steps to make sure you don’t forget anything, which may be very easy as not very many of us have experience of moving to a new country.

Moving home is an excellent time to get rid of any unwanted or unused items, this is especially true for international moves, as you may be taking a lot less items to reduce cost of shipping your personal effects abroad. For example, there may be some items such as electrical items that simply won’t work overseas due to a different wattage system. A move is always a good time to get rid of your unwanted and unused items, so make sure you do this in plenty of time!

If you have a full house to pack, you will need to get organised. Go around each room and create your own inventory of exactly what you packing, a colour coding system for each room on boxes if you are packing yourselves may be helpful, and you will know what is in what boxes when you come to unpack. Although it is advisable to leave larger furniture items and delicate goods to expert professional packers and removers.

If you are putting some things in to storage, and many professional removals companies will be able to provide this service to you, remember to keep these separate from the rest of the shipment. It is important to keep all essential travel and personal documents, medicine and small irreplaceable items such as jewellery or family heirlooms carried on your person when moving where possible. As when moving day comes, packers will work quickly and efficiently and you might not notice something you need has been packed until your shipment is leaving on a truck.

Speaking with your removals company should also help you to become more organised as they will tell you exactly what needs to be done beforehand, what will happen on the day and what to expect once your items have been shipped.

Having enough time to prepare for your move will help to remain organised. Always try to start planning your move in advance as much as possible. However, if you are moving relatively quickly, getting specialists, such as a professional removals company in to help you will be able to keep in control as they will be used to working in constrained time frames.
