International moving: when to ship and when to store

May 17. 2016

When moving overseas there will be a lot of factors to take into account. One of the most pressing, will be what to do with your possessions and personal effects. This will depend upon your personal circumstances, and the nature and length of your intended stay abroad.

It may be that you choose to have your items shipped to your new destination upon your arrival or you may opt to rent storage space. Either way, it is important to ensure your possessions are safe and dealt with appropriately.

If your move abroad is for a limited period of time, you may not want to transport everything with you. Equally, if you reside in rented accommodation and aren’t able to leave your furniture etc in the property, renting a storage space may well be the preferable option. In which case, it is worth taking time to research secure, clean and dry storage facilities. Burke Bros. offer 2 types of storage; self-storage and containerised storage. If you are likely to need regular access to your possessions it may be worth using self-storage. Burke Bros. offers premises with 24 hour CCTV, full perimeter fencing and alarm systems. Furthermore, possessions are locked away securely using your own padlock. We also offer indoor unloading areas with trolleys and sack barrows to make unloading items easier.

If you don’t need regular access to your items, you may like to consider containerised storage. If you chose this option with Burke Bros. your items will be expertly wrapped and packed and carefully loaded into a container, at your premises, and then brought into our indoor warehouse and secure storage depositary. The items can them remain in their containers until you instruct us when you like them retrieved and delivered. If you at any time urgently require access to your items, this can be arranged with prior warning.

However, if the move abroad is for a more substantial period of time, it is worth taking into account whether it is more cost-effective to have the items shipped abroad, and if you are returning, to have the items shipped back, or to leave the possessions in storage for the duration of your stay.

Whichever option you choose, take time to research what suits your specific circumstances to ensure that your possessions remain safe and secure. Acquire advice from professional removal companies.
