Choosing the Best Day of the Week to Move House

Jul 02. 2020

The planning and packing to move house, requires a significant investment of time and effort. Once you’re at the point where exchanging contracts is on the horizon and agreeing a date for completion is in the pipeline, you’ll need to agree a date for the removal with your chosen removal firm.

Are there particular days that prove most popular for people to move on? Fridays are of course the most popular, with Mondays tending to be the second most popular. Fridays give home movers the weekend to unpack and sort out their new home, possibly without the need to take time out of work schedules and disrupting the weekday routine. Sunday is the least popular day to move, with only 6% choosing that day. This is followed by Tuesday, with only 10% of moves taking place on that day (figures from the Home Owners Alliance.) August is generally the most popular time of the year for making the move.

Removal companies will be more in demand for Friday moves though and you may need to bear this in mind. Here are a few useful pointers to consider when choosing your day for the move:

-As many people opt for Friday as the moving day of choice, hold ups in the transferring of funds are more likely to happen on a Friday as this is when banks are a t their busiest dealing with housing deals completing. This is not to say that moving mid-week will mean that it’s impossible for funds to be delayed, but the odds are higher for this type of delay on a Friday.

-Removal companies may be quieter mid-week and possibly able to offer cheaper quotes for midweek moves compared to Friday moves. This will depend on how busy the company are and the time of year of the move etc but it is worth looking for a removal company as early as possible and keeping in contact with them regarding the date of the move.

-Consider that, in the worst case scenario that there is a delay in the move, you may need emergency storage. Opt for a removal company to carry out the move that can accommodate this if necessary.

-Not only are Fridays the most popular day but the last Friday of each month also tends to be the most popular and again bank money transfers can become overloaded resulting in not all transactions going through.

Whichever day you do opt to make moving day, ensure that you book an experienced removal company who are fully compliant to Covid-19 protocol.
