Designer Moves; An Interview with Our Graphic Design Student
We’ve been very pleased to welcome Lewis Ashfield, a student from Wolverhampton University, to the marketing team at Burke Bros Moving Group to carry out a work placement as part of his studies. As a company, we’ve been able to welcome a number of students over the years, either though work placements or through graduate schemes to give them experience of the moving industry and encourage them in their first steps into the working world.
Lewis has been supporting the company’s marketing team with his graphic design skills and creative flair. We hope he’s enjoying his foray into the world of international moving and learning a lot! With just a few weeks of his placement left, we’ve caught up with him to see how he’s getting on.
What made you apply for the student work experience placement with Burke Bros Moving Group?
Lewis: “I’ve been wanting to gain more experience within the creative industry, primarily within the advertising world as this kind of design really appeals to me. Another reason why I wanted to apply for the work experience placement at Burke Bros Moving Group is that they are such a well-known brand and so well revered in the area local to where I live, so it was a win-win really.
What have you worked on during the placement?
Lewis: “During my placement I have worked on a broad spectrum of projects to support the marketing team through a number of different marketing channels. I’ve been involved in producing various graphics for social media covering all aspects of their core business services from UK moving to European, international shipping as well as office moves and storage. I’ve been able to create some graphics that will be incorporated in the new company website; including images to represent the company’s corporate social responsibility activities, the services they offer to their customers moving internationally and graphics to represent their 40 year history. I have also produced some new printed stationary, that’s in use already and even supported marketing projects with our international colleagues too! It’s great to think that my work will be travelling so far abroad!
What have you learnt so far from your time at Burke Bros Moving Group?
Lewis: “During my time at Burke Bros so far, I have learnt how to be considerate of company branding – the use of company colours, using the right images and being mindful of copyright etc and making sure that brand continuity is maintained; whether I’m creating content for social media or via the blog on the website or anywhere. After all, where branding is concerned; consistency is king!
What have you most enjoyed about the placement so far?
Lewis: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Burke Bros Moving Group team(s). I’ve enjoyed the different kinds of work that I’ve been able to work on during the placement and the challenges that each day brings. Everyday has brought something different and there’s a great mix of variety in the projects I have been working on.
