Expert Tips on Reducing the Stress of Moving House

May 03. 2022

There are many positives to the home moving process. It may be that you’re moving for more space either to extend the family or to enjoy home life a little more. It maybe that the move is to a new geographical area and this allows new experiences or it could be that this is for a new job role. The positives are endless but the moving process itself is often cited as being one of life’s most stressful events. Burke Bros Moving Group have compiled some useful tips and important things to bear in mind when it comes to reducing the stressful elements of moving house and easing the process.

Time is your best ally
Leaving things until the last minute will be a major cause of stress, so it is advisable to start the process early. In particular, this means making contact with the removals company with reasonable time to allow them to conduct a survey of the premises and give you an accurate indication of costs and logistics. If you’re making the move abroad- this is even more pertinent as there will be documentation and processes that the international mover will guide you through, but the sooner that you can supply the necessary documents- the better.

Be aware of the perils of DIY moves
Doing the move yourself, without the services of a professional removal company really can create a number of issues. Firstly, you’ll need to recruit a group of willing helpers to carry the move out for you. If any of these helpers have to pull out at the last minute, this can cause you to have to arrange assistance at the last minute and this may well prove far more troublesome.

Secondly, furniture becomes far heavier when it’s being carried up and down stairs! Moving an entire household of contents is a far more physically arduous task than many people are prepared for. Removal companies have crews who are professionally trained in heavy lifting and are used to doing this day in, day out.

Thirdly, a removal company will send out a trained estimator to calculate the volume of the effects to be moved. This is important not just to generate an accurate quote but also to ensure that the correct size vehicle is used. When it comes to co-ordinating your own move and booking your own van- if the van is too small, you’ll need to do more journeys, which will create a time pressure. If it’s too large, not only will it have cost you more than was necessary but the effects will need to be packed carefully to ensure that there isn’t too much movement and breakages.

Forty Winks
Make sure that you prioritise having enough sleep. The lead up to a house move will be an extremely busy time and it’s easy to burn the candle at both end. Try to factor in the advised 7-9 hours of sleep a night as this will help you deal with the rigours of the move far better.
