Five tips to avoid mistakes when moving internationally

Apr 14. 2015

International moves are very different from domestic moves, mainly as they require more preparation, awareness, and usually the whole process takes longer when moving abroad.

Whilst even the furthest locations are no more than a full day to fly to anywhere in the world with modern aviation, people have a way of believing destinations are a lot closer than they are. International moves can be complicated, and whilst moving yourself to your new home may be a short trip, your belongings and personal effects may be taking a slower route.

We have compiled five key tips, which will be part of a running series, to avoid making mistakes when moving internationally, and making your move that bit simpler.

1) Hire a professional international moving company

Unless you are only taking a small shipment, where your belongings may travel by air, it is more than likely your goods will need to be shipped by ocean. This means your items will be wrapped and packed and your shipment will be placed into a groupage container (where you pay for the space you use), 20ft or 40ft container, depending on the volume of goods you are moving.

As some shifting can occur within containers during transit there may be some damage to your items, which may be expensive to replace. However, goods that have been professionally packed and wrapped by trained export specialists should be able to withstand the normal amount of shifting that occurs.

This is where a quality international moving company comes in, as having the expertise and knowledge to pack your own shipment is virtually impossible and although may be more costly, it will save you potentially thousands in damaged goods and custom inspection fees. Using a professional removals service will allow you to be safe in the knowledge your items are being packed properly and can offer you invaluable advice about customs and what items you are advised to take or not take to your new country of choice.

Finally, all international moving companies should have marine insurance which fully protect your money and move. If you are moving from the UK, always look for an accredited members of the British Association of Movers Overseas Group and FIDI organisation, which means all international moves are protected through a financial bond which guarantees completion of your move, even in the unlikely event a member goes out of business during transit.

Using a professional international moving company such as Burke Bros will allow you to save time, money and stress, safe in the knowledge you are working with a company with more than 30 years experience in international moves. Please call us today on 01902 714555.
