After thousands of house removals, you start to notice the same patterns.
The best moving house tips don’t come from a checklist, they come from experience. The moves that run smoothly aren’t always the ones with the least amount of furniture; they’re the ones where a little preparation has made all the difference. None of the advice below is a secret. They’re simply practical lessons our removal crews have learned after completing hundreds of successful moves.
So, we asked our team one simple question: What do you wish every customer knew before moving day?
Here are five moving house tips our crews swear by.
When you arrive at your new home, the last thing you’ll want is to search through dozens of boxes looking for your phone charger or a clean mug.
Pack one box with everything you’ll need for your first evening: the kettle, tea and coffee, chargers, medication, toiletries, a change of clothes, toilet paper and yes, even the corkscrew if that’s your way of celebrating the move.
Pack this box last so it’s the easiest to access and make sure it’s the first thing off the van.

Your removal van is secure and your belongings are handled with care. In fact, every item is treated like it’s the one thing you’d never want damaged.
Even so, passports, legal documents, jewellery, family heirlooms and spare keys are best kept with you throughout the day. It gives you peace of mind and means you’ll know exactly where they are when you arrive.
Televisions, Wi-Fi routers, sound systems and games consoles are full of cables that all seem to look the same once they’ve been unplugged.
Before disconnecting anything, take a quick photo of the back of each device. It takes less than a minute but can save a surprising amount of time when you’re setting everything up again.
It’s one of the most common questions our crews hear after a move: “Does anyone remember where this cable goes?” A quick photo means you won’t have to guess.
When unloading a van, speed and organisation make a huge difference.
A label that says “Kitchen: Box 3 of 9” tells the crew exactly where it needs to go. A box labelled “Plates, bowls, mugs, baking trays…” doesn’t.
If you’re putting items into storage, detailed contents lists can be incredibly useful. But for moving day itself, simple room labels help everything flow much more efficiently.
One of the most overlooked moving house tips is giving your freezer enough time to defrost.
Ideally, switch it off 24 to 48 hours before moving day. This allows it to thaw completely and dry out properly.
Leave it until the night before and there’s a good chance you’ll be moving a leaking appliance. Every removal crew has a story involving melting ice and unexpected puddles and trust us, it’s a story you don’t want to recreate.
These moving house tips may seem simple, but they’re based on thousands of successful removals and years of hands-on experience. A little preparation before moving day can save time, reduce stress and help your move run as smoothly as possible.
After all, these aren’t tricks, they’re just lessons learned from helping families move home every day.
