Moving Stories; Packing Books for Moving Day

Mar 09. 2020

Whether they are signed editions, books for early readers or just your favourite set of novels, a full book shelf often makes a house a home and we understand the importance of protecting your favourite reads when it comes to moving day.

Here are a few points to consider when packing your books up ahead of the big day to ensure that they make their journey to your new home in the best possible condition.

Small is best
Obtain a few small boxes for the purposes of packing your books. Don’t be tempted to load all of your books into too large a box and it will quickly become too heavy to lift. Spread the weight of the books in a range of smaller boxes to make them easier to deal with and less likely to incur damage.

The best option is to obtain professional grade, appropriately sized boxes from your removal company. These will be the right size to lift and will be strong enough to protect your favourite reads in transit.

Pad it out
It’s worth lining the boxes with tissue paper to protect the spines of the books and where there are gaps between the books pad with bubble wrap and extra tissue paper to prevent them from moving about too much. Pack then books flat so that the pages don’t get crinkled up.

Particularly for paperback books, pack the books with the spines down and where hardback books are being moved, pack these at the bottom of the box as they will be the heaviest.

Where possible pack extra pieces of cardboard between books to prevent damage. Add a final layer of tissue paper on top of the books before sealing up the box.

Leave it to the professionals
You can of course leave the packing to your removal company. Ensure they use removal crews that are professionally trained in packing and always speak to your removal company prior to the move to ensure that they are aware that you want a packing service and that they supply you with an accurate quotes for the items that you wish to have packed.
