Moving to Marlborough, New Zealand

May 17. 2017

Famed for its exquisite fiords and vineyards, Marlborough benefits from being one of New Zealand’s sunnier locations. Situated on the North-Eastern corner of the South Island, the sunny region is home to a highly successful wine industry and also makes for an ideal place to pursue outdoor activities for those that hanker for more of an out of doors lifestyle.

Its main town, Blenheim is predominantly an agricultural town surrounded by the Wairau Plain. The town itself also has good local amenities. The Northern part of Malborough is well known as ‘hill country’ and is home to the hilly region of the ‘Marlborough Sounds’. The rugged Kaikoura Ranges lie to the south of the region.

The climate of the area, often means that Blenheim is in the running for New Zealands’ sunniest town; which alone causes it to be of appeal to British expats. The landscape provides the idea backdrop for fishing and boating on the waterways, tracks for cycling, mountain biking and walking routes such as the Queen Charlotte Track.

In terms of job prospects, Marlborough produces in excess of 50% of New Zealand’s wines for exporting and is particularly well known for the production of Sauvignon Blanc. Equally, the area has a thriving tourist industry; due in part to its wineries but also to the opportunity to whale watch from the Kaikoura coast. The area also has a growing business services sector.

Marlborough is able to offer an ample selection of schools, with around 30 on offer, as well as a wide selection of pre-school establishments. Further education courses are available from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology; which has a campus in Marlborough.

Housing in Marlborough is presently more affordable than in many other parts of New Zealand and the choice of types of property is still wide ranging. Blenheim and Picton offer more suburban homes, with more rural properties available further out.

We have in excess of 35 years of experience of moving families and individuals to all areas of New Zealand. To discuss shipping household effects to Marlborough or indeed to any area in New Zealand, please call 01902 714555 or email sales@burkebros.co.uk.
