Packing Items Ready for Self Storage

Oct 26. 2015

Here at Burke Bros Self Storage we know packing items ready for self storage isn’t as simple as filling the box. But packing also doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. We have a few tips on how to box your items to help keep you and your belongings protected.

It is important to stay organised, before, during and after you are using secure self access storage. You should always label your boxes with their contents and keep an inventory of what you have in store so you know exactly where your items are and what you have in storage.

If you are an avid reader but need to free up some space on your bookshelves, remember to pack books flat on top of each other avoid damaging their spines. Avoid entirely filling a box full with dense books as it can make it too heavy for most people to lift safely.

Try to put a lid or cover up most of you items as anything left unboxed may become dusty, even in the cleanest of storage units. Try to fill boxes to capacity by adding small foam chips or bubble wrap to fill gaps if necessary this will stop the boxes shifting and collapsing during transportation if there is nothing to support them.

Distribute the weight in packed boxes as evenly as you can. Place the heavier bulkier items in the bottom of the box to avoid damaging small and lighter items which should be towards the top of the box. Always make sure the box is not too heavy for the person who may be lifting them.

Take care and wrap all fragile items separately. Pack any delicate items into strong or reinforced boxes, filling any gaps with paper or filler such as foam chips. Remember to label your boxes containing breakable items as “fragile”, marking it this on more than one side so you can easily identify the contents.
