Five Important Tips for Moving to Canada

Jun 17. 2021

1. Timing.

We advise that you don’t leave it until the last moment to contact us to obtain a quote and information about the moving process. The best time to make contact with a removal company when planning a move to Canada is around 12 weeks before you plane to leave the UK. Speak to an international sales consultants, either during a ‘in-home visit’ or via a video survey is you prefer, to obtain an accurate and realistic quotation and to gain valuable advice on the moving process.

2. Do’s and don’ts.

There will be some items that can’t be shipped to Canada; for example fireworks and other highly flammables, seeds, herbs, dried flowers, untreated animal skins, untreated wood etc. The removal company should supply you with a complete list of all of these items.

3. A carton for everything.

Every care should be taken to ensure the safe arrival of your possessions. Your chosen remover should have export quality cartons to suit all of your household effects eg cartons for books, cartons for fragile items like china and glass, larger cartons for linen etc. Your remover should not be loose wrapping furniture. They should be using professionally trained export- wrappers to individually wrap each item of furniture using a high quality laminated material. Where more specialist items are concerned (for example pianos or glass fronted furniture) your chosen company should be able to offer to make timber cases especially for these items. Bear in mind that even in the very best organisations mishaps can sometimes occur with international shipping. Always speak to your chosen international remover about goods in transit marine insurance.

4. Load size.

Your remover will send your effects either in a 20” or 40” container that is dedicated for your use only. On this basis there is approximately a five week transit time for containers to Canada. There is also an option of shipping your goods on a shared load basis; in which your possessions share space in a container with other customers’ household effects. This can be a cheaper option as the cost is essentially split amongst more parties. Bear in mind though that the transit time is likely to be longer and as rule of thumb; can be approximately 12 weeks.

5. Keep it clean.

There must be absolutely no sign of outdoor debris on any item that has had contact with outside surfaces, for example foot ware of all types, cycles, garden tools, garden furniture and the like. If these items aren’t clean enough the quarantine inspector can request additional cleaning possibly by fumigation or steam cleaning. For this, you will be liable for the extra cost. If you opt to take a motor vehicle with you (experienced shippers will be able to arrange this for you), the vehicle will also need to be thoroughly steam cleaned and valeted prior to shipping.
