How Long Do Removals to Canada Take?

Feb 10. 2023

There will be so many things to think about when planning your removals to Canada and you will most likely have a lot of questions about how the process works. Amongst these areas of uncertainty, may well be how long it will take to ship your effects to Canada.

On average, household effects can take between 5 and 16 weeks to be shipped to Canada if you’re moving a full household and require your goods to travel in a sole use container. If you have less than a full household and have opted for a shared load, in which you’re just paying for the space that your goods occupy- this will take longer as your international moving company will need to consolidate other loads to travel in the same container. This takes on average, 8-10 weeks to arrive. These are approximations and are subject to a number of different factors, one of which is the final destination in Canada.

There is some advice on how to avoid delays during the removals to Canada process:

– Remember that Canadian Customs can carry out random inspections of any shipment. It’s important to adhere strictly to the customs rules and regulations. It’s also strongly advised to consult the expertise of a professional international moving company who have a lot of experience in moving household effects to Canada. Their advice really is invaluable. They move households to and from Canada day in day out and really will save you a lot of heartache, over and above trying to navigate these regulations alone.

– It’s not advisable to import food items or plant materials in your shipment to Canada. It may well be that these items are not permitted and will prompt the need for customs to carry out a special examination. This can of course result in a delay and also in inspection costs.

– There will be several documents that you will need to have to be able to successfully ship your effects to Canada. For example you’ll need a B4E form, a packing list as well as a copy of your passport and immigration papers etc. Again, your chosen international mover will be able to advise on what you need and when you need it.

– If you’re taking a pet(s) with you to Canada, the process for taking them abroad is quite involved and so it’s advisable to speak to your remover and ask for a recommendation for a specialised pet transportation company. They work with this companies on a regular basis and will be able to supply you with recommendations.
