Moving to Hong Kong Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to co-ordinating your move to Hong Kong, obtaining the right advice is essential to make for a stress free and smooth move. Remember; it is your precious possessions that you are moving, so do insist on choosing a shipping company with experience of shipping to Hong Kong and in whom you feel you can place your trust.

To help you find answers to some of your concerns, here are some of the questions that our customers moving to Hong Kong ask most frequently:

Will my furniture be safe and secure?

Our warehouse is modern and secure and we have a large amount of CCTV cameras so once your furniture has been collected, you can rest assured that your consignment will be safe and secure until you are ready for shipping to Hong Kong. All your possessions will be professionally handled by our own staff. We are a proud member of the FIDI FAIM, BAR & IAM Mover Associations, and all our staff are expertly trained to exacting industry standards.

What are the costs of shipping?

Our quotations are based on volume, and we can tailor made to suit your needs and requirements for everything you need to move to Hong Kong. We will provide you with a written quotation outlining the services offered and our contract conditions and exclusions. Prices will vary depending on the volume and the nature and size of the shipping consignment.

Do you provide export wrapping services?

We are able to provide you with a qualified export wrapping service by trained professionals. Our staff will carefully export wrap the furniture with a bubble blanket which is designed specifically for the protection of all types of furniture during transit and storage. Soft line bubble blanket offers not only the versatility of bubble on a roll abut provides greater flexibility and reduces waste compared with other traditional forms of furniture protection. With the tissue being slightly absorbent it can be not only used for furniture but has many other uses and be specifically used for packing and wrapping ceramics and leather and all types of wood furniture that need shipping to Hong Kong.

How long will it take to arrive?

Generally, with an international shipping service approximately 8/ 12 weeks based on a groupage / shared service (depending on final destination.) If you opt for an exclusive use container option, your goods can be moved to Hong Kong door to door in 5/6 weeks. By liaising with your Move Manager, it may be possible to reduce or increase these transit times so that they fit in with your travel arrangements and schedule for arriving in Hong Kong.

How long is the removal quote valid for?

Our quotation is valid for 28 days; this is due to the nature and variances of international shipping which can be affected by currency fluctuations and increase in ocean and air freight costs between the UK and Hong Kong.

Is any VAT applicable on removal services?

For international removals VAT is not applicable for overseas move, VAT is only applicable on UK domestic removal services i.e., storage, or ancillary services like handyman or external liftings or hire of specialised equipment.

What if I require storage prior to shipping of my furniture?

We have secure and modern warehousing with CCTV cameras, so once your furniture has been collected, the consignment will be safe and secure, whether it is for a short period whilst in transit, or for a longer term, we are able to offer you with a competitive storage cost, prior to your shipping service to Hong Kong.

Do you offer groupage (shared) container services for smaller consignments?

Groupage (Shared) service is the economically recognised method of shipping for smaller volume moves as you are saving money by sharing costs. Your household effects are loaded into a shared container with other Burke Bros consignments bound for the same geographical destination as soon as sufficient volumes are available; this way you only pay for the container space utilised. Can you provide insurance cover?

Whilst great care is taken during the removal of your furniture and we will do everything possible to ensure your possessions arrive safely in Hong Kong, insurance is a way of managing risks. When you buy insurance, you transfer the cost of a potential loss to the insurance company.
A transit proposal form will be provided with all our quotation extended. We advise you to read the information carefully; if there any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.

Moving day has arrived what happens next?

Prior to your moving day, our operations team will confirm the date and approximate time scale. On moving day itself, our crew will advise you on route if they are going to be late etc. Once the crew has arrived at your collection address, show the packing team around and point out what is going – crew will decide upon where to start. Be sure to address any concerns you have before packing commences. Make sure you have everything you need for your travel arrangements (passport, airlines tickets in a safe place etc.) Once the collection has been completed, make sure you have one final look around before the removal team leaves and make sure everything is checked and good to go. Now time to leave, your new destination in Hong Kong awaits.

Do I need a delivery address before it arrives?

All we require prior to shipping is a contact address and contact details. Once your furniture has arrived in Hong Kong, and has been through the customs clearance process, it is at this point, we will require a delivery address, however if you are not in a position to provide we can arrange storage on your behalf.

Once my Furniture shipping has arrived, what happens next?

Our partner office will contact you prior to the arrival of your shipment and go through with you the customs process. If documentation is required they will send to you in advance, so once it arrives, it can be cleared and delivered without delay.

Will there be additional charges to pay?

All our quotation are usually based on a door-to-door service and will included all ocean charges, terminals and custom clearance formalities. What is not included in our quotations are customs inspection fees, any customs duty or taxes on new goods or goods that do not meet the unaccompanied effects ruling.

How do payments and deposits work?

On booking of your shipping service to Hong Kong, we will book your nominated collection date, we will provide you with an invoice which is in accordance with our trading terms and we will respectfully request that we receive payment of the invoice prior to the commencement of removal services. Once payment has been received your consignment will be scheduled to depart as per your quoted terms.
