Dedicated removals to Italy provide a personalised service where the entire removal vehicle is reserved for your belongings. This option suits larger moves or when you need your items delivered on a specific date. It offers direct transportation from your current residence to your new home in Italy, ensuring a quicker and more tailored moving experience.

Export packing for your move to Italy involves specialised materials and techniques to ensure your belongings are securely protected during transit. It’s crucial for international moves, where items can be exposed to various handling stages and environmental conditions. Our professional packing services use durable materials and methods tailored to each item, from wrapping delicate glassware to crating valuable art, ensuring they arrive safely at your new home in Italu. This service provides peace of mind, safeguarding your possessions throughout their journey.

Customs Clearance

1. Personal Belongings and Household Goods

  • Inventory List: A detailed and signed inventory list of all items being moved is crucial. This list should be in Italian or accompanied by an Italian translation and should specify the contents, quantity, and value of each item.
  • Proof of Residence: You need to prove that you are moving your primary residence from the UK to Italy. This can be shown through an Italian residency registration (iscrizione anagrafica) or a lease/property deed in Italy.
  • Codice Fiscale (Tax Code): It’s important to obtain an Italian tax code, which is necessary for various administrative processes in Italy, including customs clearance.
  • Declaration of Free Entry (Dichiarazione di Libero Ingresso): A statement declaring that the goods have been in your possession and use for at least 12 months before the move, which qualifies them for duty-free entry as part of your relocation.

2. Vehicles

  • Importing Vehicles: To import a vehicle duty-free as part of your household move, you must have owned and used the vehicle for at least 12 months prior to relocating. Necessary documents include the original vehicle registration, proof of ownership, and insurance records.
  • Technical Inspection: Imported vehicles might need to comply with Italian standards, requiring a technical inspection.
  • Registration: After import, the vehicle must be registered in Italy. Temporary plates may be used during the transition.

3. Restricted and Prohibited Items

  • Certain items may be restricted or require special permits to import into Italy, such as firearms, certain medications, antiques, and artwork. Check the latest Italian customs regulations to ensure compliance.

4. Pets

  • Pets need to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. They also require an EU pet passport or a veterinary health certificate. Additional treatments (like tapeworm treatment for dogs) might be needed depending on the pet and the country of origin.

Our European department offers complete step-by-step support to complete the necessary customs documents.

Applying For A Visa

As a UK citizen, you now require a visa to live in Italy for periods longer than 90 days due to Brexit. The United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union means that UK citizens no longer enjoy freedom of movement within the EU, which includes Italy.

For stays longer than 90 days, you will typically need to apply for a national long-stay visa (Visa D), which is applicable for various purposes such as work, study, family reunification, or retirement. After entering Italy with a long-stay visa, you will also need to apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) to legally live in Italy. The type of visa and residence permit you need depends on the reasons for your stay and your circumstances, such as:

  • Work Visa: For those who have a job offer from an Italian employer or are transferring within a company.
  • Self-Employment Visa: For those who plan to start a business or work as freelancers in Italy.
  • Student Visa: For those enrolled in a course of study at an Italian educational institution.
  • Family Visa: For joining a family member who is residing legally in Italy.
  • Elective Residence Visa: For individuals who can support themselves independently without working, often used by retirees.

It’s important to consult the Italian consulate or embassy closest to you for detailed information on visa requirements and the application process based on your specific situation.

Register with the Local Authorities

Anagrafe Registration: Once you have a place of residence, you need to register with the local registry office (Anagrafe) at your town hall (Comune). This registration is crucial for accessing local services and healthcare.

Living in Italy

Italy offers a rich blend of history, culture, and modern amenities, making it an appealing destination for expatriates. The Italian lifestyle is renowned for its emphasis on family, food, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Cities like Rome, Florence, and Milan boast stunning architecture, world-class art, and vibrant local markets. The Mediterranean climate provides pleasant weather year-round, perfect for outdoor activities and exploring picturesque landscapes. Furthermore, Italy’s healthcare system is highly regarded, and its education system offers various options for expatriate families.

Property in Italy

Italy’s property market is as diverse as its landscape, offering a wealth of options from historic rural homes to contemporary city apartments.

  1. Historic Charm: Properties like farmhouses in Tuscany, medieval castles in Umbria, and trulli in Puglia provide a unique charm steeped in history.
  2. Urban Living: Major cities such as Rome, Milan, and Florence offer modern apartments with amenities close to cultural landmarks, shopping, and dining.
  3. Coastal Retreats: The Amalfi Coast, Liguria, and Sicily feature beautiful villas and homes with stunning sea views.
  4. Market Insights: Property prices vary significantly by region. Northern Italy tends to be more expensive compared to the south. Urban areas generally command higher prices than rural locations.
  5. Buying Process: Purchasing property in Italy involves understanding local laws and regulations. It’s recommended to work with local real estate agents and legal advisors to navigate the process.
  6. Renovation Opportunities: Many older properties, especially in rural areas, may require renovation. This can be an opportunity to restore a property to its former glory with modern comforts.
  7. Rental Market: For those not looking to buy, the rental market offers flexibility. Long-term and short-term rental options are widely available, catering to different needs and budgets.

Healthcare in Italy for UK Expats

Italy’s healthcare system, the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), is known for its high standards and accessibility. Here’s what UK expats need to know:

  1. Registration with SSN: UK expats who are legal residents can register with the SSN at their local health authority (Azienda Sanitaria Locale, ASL). This registration provides access to free or low-cost healthcare services, including general practitioners, specialists, hospital care, and emergency services.
  2. European Health Insurance Card (EHIC): Before moving, UK expats should ensure they have an EHIC, which grants temporary access to healthcare in Italy. However, this is not a substitute for long-term healthcare needs.
  3. Private Healthcare: While the public system is comprehensive, many expats opt for private healthcare for quicker access to specialists and treatments. Private health insurance can cover these services, offering additional peace of mind.
  4. Pharmacies and Medications: Pharmacies are widely available and can dispense prescription medications. Many common medicines are available over-the-counter, and pharmacists can offer medical advice.
  5. Specialist Care and Hospitals: Access to specialist care often requires a referral from a general practitioner. Italy has numerous well-regarded hospitals, with some specialising in specific areas of medicine.
  6. Language Barrier: In urban areas, many healthcare providers speak English, but in rural areas, it might be beneficial to have a basic understanding of Italian or bring a translator.
  7. Emergency Services: Emergency healthcare is available to everyone, including non-residents, and can be accessed by calling 112, the European emergency number.
  8. Quality and Efficiency: Italy’s healthcare system is ranked highly globally, ensuring expats receive quality care.
