If you’re moving to Cyprus and looking for work on the island, it has been reported that the countries’ labour market is improving. The Global Financial Crisis hit Cyprus hard and the labour market, in particular, suffered significant set-backs. However, the rate of unemployment makes for better reading in recent times with a steady decline in unemployment figures in the past few years. The figures compare well with neighbouring Greece, for example, where unemployment is higher.
In particular, Cyprus has well established industries in international shipping, real estate and the services sector. The hospitality sector is often recruiting due to Cyprus remaining as a popular holiday destination and this currently accounts for the largest part of national GDP.
There is still considerable competition for job vacancies in Cyprus, so be prepared to sell your expertise and highlight your qualifications. A willingness to improve your language skills will also be important in standing a chance in the job market.
Do as much research as you can and, as with many job searches, network as much as you can, even before you arrive in the country. Many companies accept speculative applications, so will be willing to receive a copy of your CV to keep on record. Once you have arrived in the country, continue to keep networking to help find opportunities. The island also has ‘Public Employment Offices’, certainly in the major cities, where job postings can be found here also.
