Shipping of Vehicles to Cyprus

Dec 01. 2017

Many of our customers who are starting a new life in Cyprus, decide to take their vehicle with them, along with their household contents. During our decades of service, we have become specialists in removals to and from Cyprus. Here is a brief outline of what is involved:

For a motor vehicle to be imported duty free, (for a shipper from an EU country), a range of stipulations must be met, namely; the car is registered in the name of the shipper and has been in use for over 6 months. The mileage must exceed 6,000 km. The owner of the vehicle must have lived abroad for a 12 month, uninterrupted period in advance of the transfer of normal residence. The car must also be imported within 6 months of the owner’s transfer of primary residence to Cyprus and the owner must then prove permanent relocation to Cyprus.

We advise customers that the following documents will be required: passport, OBL / Express Waybill, letter of employment, bank statement confirming the shipper holds an account on the Island, registration of any children at local schools and a full packing list.

There are also a number of options available for shipping a vehicle to Cyprus. The most cost effective is the ‘roll on roll off’ method. The vehicle is driven directly onto the vessel from the port of origin. It’s still made safe and secure on the ship and then upon arrival at the destination port, the vehicle will be driven off ready for customs clearance. There must be no effects in the car (no suitcases or boxes etc) and the fuel must be run down to less than a quarter of a tank.  Notably, with this method; the shipper of the vehicle must be present in the country to collect it before the shipment arrives.

Alternatively, customers can opt for the use of a container. It they opt for a shared container, the vehicle is shipped with other items or another car. Safety procedures are put in place to protect your vehicle and ensure it is safe. This option is still cost effective too as the customer only pays for the space the car occupies. It is also quite convenient as this method involves the car being delivered to your home.

If a customer is moving their household contents with the vehicle it may be worth having a sole-use container. This way, once the customer has purchased the container, the remaining space can be filled at no extra charge. Depending on the size of the car and the amounts of household goods required in the move; either a 20ft or 40ft container can be purchased.
